Smoked & Black
Our Architect Collection is composed of an European Oak timber top layer bonded on to an engineered base to ensure stability. The boards come pre-finished in a smoked base with a black stain in the low grain, accentuating the grain and darkening the overall colour.
The boards are tongue and grooved on ends and sides. They are sold with a flat Aluminium Oxide, UV resistant, low VOC coating. 30% of product is sold as random shorts and product is graded ABCD which means some boards will be clean and others will feature knots.

Oak is a slow growing and beautiful natural resource. By using a 6mm, 4mm or 3mm top layer of European Oak instead of solid board the valuable oak species that is used stretches three times further. The engineered substrate is made from fast growing plantation timbers and provides a solid and incredibly stable base for the board. The oak forests are selectively felled and allowed to regenerate naturally. This product is available with PEFC certification.
Timber is a natural product. Colour will vary from printed versions and samples. Boards will vary across every floor. It is this variation that gives timber its natural beauty and appeal.
Smoking refers to the natural oxidation/ageing process of the oak timber, where the boards are fumed or ‘smoked’ for three days with ammonia vapour. This vapour chemically reacts with the tannin in the oak and causes it to deepen in colour to a level that the oak would otherwise reach naturally over 20-30 years. The advantage of smoking is that it achieves a natural colour which permeates all the way through the 6 mm wear layer. The smoking also gives the boards an attractive tonal variation from pale to mid tone plus veining within individual boards. These finishes rely on the tonal variance of the smoked base colour to achieve a finish and subtlety that is not possible with other staining processes.
